You could avoid a £1,000 fine by remembering to comply with this driving law!

An investigation discovered that over 900,000 drivers face a £1,000 fine for failing to renew expired photocard licences within the last year – this is equal to 2% of all drivers!

Whilst drivers have the entitlement to be on the roads until the age of 70, after this they must renew their licence every three years. All other drivers must renew their photocards every 10 years.

Where can I find the expiry date?

You will find the date in section 4b on your ID. The DVLA will contact you up to 56 days before your licence ends so provided your address is up to date, you will have time to order a new card and - you guessed it - if your address isn’t up to date, you can also receive a £1,000 fine for this!

Whilst you wait for your card to be updated, you should not receive a fine. It is important to note, if you are caught without an up-to-date card and surrender it, you may be prosecuted for driving without a license.
