Is undertaking illegal?

Undertaking is the act of passing a vehicle on the left of another vehicle. It is referred to in the Highway Code as ‘overtaking on the left’. In the United Kingdom you are not typically allowed to undertake.

While the carriageway is clear, you should always drive in the left lane. If drivers stick to the 'keep-left' rule, they can travel at different speeds on the same length of road.

What makes drivers undertake?

Some drivers do not follow proper lane discipline and instead decide to stick to the middle lanes. Although passing someone on the left appears to be a simple alternative, it is almost always unlawful and dangerous.

If you begin to undertake a vehicle, you increase your chances of colliding because you will both be moving into the same gap on the road.  As most drivers adhere to the Highway Code, they are less likely to anticipate someone speeding by on their left and may hit you.

Is there an appropriate time to undertake?

It's crucial to keep up with the vehicle in front of you if you're on a slow-moving highway where everyone is crawling along. You must revert to the keep-left principle and overtake on the right as soon as traffic begins to move more freely.

If your lane is moving faster, it may be safer to pass a car travelling below the average speed limit on your right. It is safer to do this than to weave in and out of traffic.

What will happen if I’m caught?

You could receive a fine for careless driving or driving without due care and attention. This could result in three points on your license and a £100 fine.
